The Good, the Bad, the Ugly on Trans Fats

Funny how knowledge changes how you eat and what you think of as good, bad or downright ugly food. Consider how the perception of trans-fatty acids changed over the years.

When I was a little girl, not that we know, which was a trans-fat. But trans fats were all about in many of the prepared food we ate. It is generally in all foods that list partially hydrogenated oil of any kind on the label. We knew only about foods high in cholesterol, like butter. We wereconvinced that the foods were high in cholesterol, the enemy. We eagerly traded eat butter for margarine.

But most stick margarines was and is still made with partially hydrogenated fats that are high in trans-fatty acids. We thought our parents saved us from the terrible, cholesterol ridden by buying our butter margarine. Since we do not know health effects of trans-fatty acids, it was a preferable choice cholesterol.

Food companies jumped on the trans-fat train onprovide foods with a longer shelf life and turn their fat of choice to include some form of partially hydrogenated oil, trans-fatty acids. We were glad that our cookies crackers, bread mixes and remained on the shelf fresh for a long, long time. It was good.

Oh, how times have changed.

Our eyes were recently opened to the public health consequences of eating the "trans-fatty acids in our food. Research has shown that trans-fatty acids contribute to some cancersLevels.

Even after the authors of a study by Harvard and the University of Wageningen in the Netherlands, scientific literature shows that trans fatty acids increase the serum levels of LDL cholesterol ( "bad" cholesterol), lowers levels of HDL-cholesterol, and can also promote result of inflammation, endothelial dysfunction can and can not) also on other risk factors for cardiovascular disease (CVD.

Another way of trans fats could have an impact on our health is in weight control. TheResults of a survey study was conducted on monkeys at the annual meeting of the American Diabetes Association in Washington DC showed this year. She pointed out that a diet rich in trans fatty acids may increase weight gain around the abdomen.

Now, armed with this new knowledge, we can make a new choice, as we see foods containing trans fats, too. For many people with set wellness goals, it means that a switch to non-hydrogenated fats like cold pressed olive oil, canola and peanut oil andpolyunsaturated fatty acids such as safflower, sesame and sunflower oils in moderation. It also means reading the labels of foods on the ingredients in the foods we choose and to be aware of the choices.

Also it is good to know that there is trans-fat free margarines on the market that are low in saturated fats. Margarine is a trans-fat free choice.

The outcry against the trans-fatty acids has reached a point that has the Commissioner for Health, the City of New York are called into lifeCampaign against restaurants and food suppliers on the use of partially hydrogenated fats, trans-fatty acids. In 2004, Denmark passed a law providing that effectively removed trans fatty acids from the diet.

Many prepared foods in the U.S. still contain trans fat even with all the research. Under the new FDA guidelines, as at 1 January 2006 Trans fats are required to be listed on the labeling of foods in the United States. Now you can at least read your labels to know whether theYou buy food containing trans fats.

As we learn more about our food and its impact on our health, we can the decisions that we make our spa to help meet targets. There is another thing you can do. Help those you know and love will also be informed. There is information available to us our greatest range of choices.
